Eye Care for Kids - Dr. Jai Kelkar

  Preface

Every person who is an avid reader dreams about writing a book someday. So this is not just a book, it is my dream....

There are several unanswered questions about eye care in general, and in particular children's eyes. Many anguished parents often ask "Will my child get glasses because he/she watches too much TV.? Will the number of his eye remain steady, if he/she wears it all the time? My baby is so small how can he/she have cataract? Is retinoblastoma for real? Or was it only a story for a award winning flim?
The list of questions is endless. I felt the need to try to answer these queries, which I felt are approriate and upto my capacity.
This book tries to encompass most of the paediatric eye diseases which are seen commonly ans also which are relatively uncommon. Very rare eye problems and syndromes are beyond the scope of this book.
You will also find good articles by experts explaining how the visually impaired can succeed in life, or how consanguinity is a major cause of several eye problems in infants and children. Retinitis pigmentosa (a well known cause of severe visual handicap and night blindness) is also explained in great detail. Addresses of various shcools and institutions for the blind in Maharashtra are placed at the end.
I wish to add that the first few chapters may seem a bit technical to the reader. But they are imprtant for the complete understanding of the eye problems in children. I have simplifies them to the best of my ability. All said and sone this is my small attempt at parent education and I hope it helps you while taking care of your childs' eye.
