Who we are
A Legacy of 100+ Years in Eye Care
For over a century, the Kelkar family has been at the forefront of ophthalmology in India, contributing to advancements in treatment and care that have shaped eye health for generations. This enduring commitment to vision has been passed down across three generations, creating a foundation built on ethics, expertise, and compassion.
The Beginning of NIO
In 1993, Dr. Shreekant Kelkar and Mrs. Aruna Kelkar founded the National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO) in Pune, driven by a vision to provide world-class eye care that is ethical, affordable, and accessible. With their untiring dedication, NIO quickly grew into one of the most trusted super-specialty eye hospitals in the region.
Three Distinct Centers, One Legacy
Today, NIO’s legacy continues through three independent entities, each serving patients with specialized focus:
- NIO Shivajinagar (Trust Hospital, Charitable Unit):
Pune’s first NABH-accredited eye hospital, offering affordable and ethical care across cataract, retina, cornea, pediatric ophthalmology, and more. - NIOEyes+ Aundh (Private Super-Specialty Hospital):
A premium, state-of-the-art facility co-founded by Dr. Aditya and Dr. Jaee Kelkar, equipped for advanced LASIK, cataract, retina, and oculoplastic surgeries. - NIO Vision Center Baner (OPD & Diagnostics):
A convenient clinic for consultations, screenings, and follow-ups, ensuring community-level access to eye care with seamless referrals to Shivajinagar and Aundh.
Together, these three centers uphold the same values of excellence, ethics, and innovation that define the Kelkar legacy.
