What is age-related macular degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It leads to gradual loss of central vision, while peripheral vision is usually preserved.

There are two main types:

  • Dry AMD – the more common form, characterized by gradual degeneration of the macula
  • Wet AMD – a less common but more severe form, caused by abnormal blood vessel growth under the retina

Symptoms may include:

  • Blurred or distorted central vision
  • Difficulty reading or recognizing faces
  • Dark or empty areas in the center of vision
  • Straight lines appearing wavy (metamorphopsia)
  • Reduced vision in one eye
  • Squinting or closing one eye
  • Poor depth perception

AMD is diagnosed through a detailed eye examination. Tests may include retinal evaluation, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and, in some cases, angiography to assess abnormal blood vessels.

Treatment depends on the type and stage:

  • Dry AMD : No definitive cure, but nutritional supplements and regular monitoring may help slow progression
  • Wet AMD: Intravitreal anti-VEGF injections to control abnormal blood vessels and preserve vision

Early detection and regular follow-up are important to manage the condition effectively.
