Keratoconus

Keratoconu
What is keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a condition in which the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) becomes progressively thin and bulges outward into a cone-like shape. This leads to distorted vision and increased sensitivity to light.

It is believed to be related to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Frequent eye rubbing, allergies, and certain connective tissue disorders may increase the risk.

Symptoms may include:

  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Frequent changes in spectacle power
  • Increased sensitivity to light (photophobia)
  • Glare and halos, especially at night
  • Difficulty with night vision

Keratoconus is diagnosed through a detailed eye examination and specialized tests such as corneal topography which map the shape and thickness of the cornea.

Treatment depends on the severity of the condition:

  • Early stages: Glasses or contact lenses
  • Progressive cases: Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) to halt progression
  • Advanced cases: Specialized contact lenses or corneal transplantation
