The National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO) was formally established on Ghole Road in Pune in 1993, marking a significant advancement in Dr. Shreekant Kelkar’s long-standing vision.
Advanced eye care in Pune at the time frequently required travel to distant cities, however, NIO altered that reality. It was one of the first facilities in the area to be designed as a completely integrated eye care clinic, combining several ophthalmic specialities into one building.
Since its founding, NIO has provided a wide range of services, including oculoplasty, paediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, anterior segment care, retina, and other subspecialties. In addition to improving the quality of care offered locally, this strategy made therapy more accessible and easy for patients and their families.
